The welding speeds can be slower than other welding processes, however looking at the full manufacturing process FSW may save time by having less disotrtion.
For thicker welds multiple passes are required for tradition processes thus the average time to complete a full weld in many cases FSW can be faster.
There are higher upfront capital costs, but the entry, time and other costs can be significantly lower which can make FSW cheaper in many instances.
You need the materials, FSW tool, a fixture and a machine that can withstand the forces. Then you need the right speeds and feeds with intimate tool contact to get a good FSW.
